How to install add-ons for World of Warcraft: Forever

Installing an add-on by hand takes about two minutes. You only need the zip file and the right folder.

1. Find your AddOns folder

Every game version has its own folder inside your World of Warcraft folder. For WoW: Forever it is _forever_. Add-ons live in Interface/AddOns inside it. If the AddOns folder does not exist yet, create it.

Windows

C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\_forever_\Interface\AddOns

macOS

/Applications/World of Warcraft/_forever_/Interface/AddOns

Not sure where the game is installed? Open the Battle.net app, pick World of Warcraft, choose the game version, then open the gear menu next to Play and click "Show in Explorer" (Windows) or "Show in Finder" (macOS).

2. Unzip the add-on into the folder

Open the zip and move the folder inside it into AddOns. The folder name must match the .toc file inside it, for example AddOns/GearRadarForever/GearRadarForever.toc.

Right

Interface/
└─ AddOns/
   └─ GearRadarForever/
      ├─ GearRadarForever.toc
      ├─ Core.lua
      └─ …

Wrong

Interface/
└─ AddOns/
   └─ GearRadarForever/
      └─ GearRadarForever/
         ├─ GearRadarForever.toc
         └─ …

A folder inside a folder with the same name, or loose .lua files directly in AddOns. The game will not find the add-on.

3. Turn it on in the game

Start the game or type /reload if it is already running. On the character screen click AddOns in the lower left corner and make sure the add-on has a check mark.

Add-on does not show up?

  • 1Check the folder level. You should see GearRadarForever.toc directly inside AddOns/GearRadarForever/.
  • 2Check the game version folder. Add-ons for WoW: Forever go into _forever_, not into _retail_ or _classic_era_.
  • 3If the add-on shows as "out of date", tick "Load out of date AddOns" at the top of the AddOns list.
  • 4Restart the game fully once. A new add-on folder is only found at startup or after /reload.

Updating an add-on

Delete the old add-on folder and copy the new one in its place. Settings are stored separately in the WTF folder, so they stay.

Removing an add-on

Delete its folder from Interface/AddOns. To also remove its saved settings, delete the matching file in WTF/Account/<your account>/SavedVariables.

What about add-on managers?

Apps like the CurseForge app can install and update add-ons for you. Copperwick add-ons are currently offered as direct downloads from this site, so the steps above are all you need.
